Sir, You report on the emergency step being taken by the government to address the chronic shortage of funding for social care. But this is little more than a patching-up exercise. A much more intensive course of treatment is required throughout the remainder of this parliament to prevent both health and social care services from imploding. I have proposed to the House of Lords select committee investigating this issue that such treatment will need to start from the basis of a new, integrated National Health and Social Care Service.
To prevent a postcode lottery emerging in the delivery of care, which looks likely under the government’s current proposals, this combined service should be funded by a new, progressive national insurance system.
