Happy Birthday Cool Earth

30 May 2012
Cool Earth This evening Frank Field hosted a reception in Parliament to celebrate the fifth birthday of the rainforest charity Cool Earth.

Dame Vivienne Westwood, Baroness Anne Jenkin, Pamela Anderson, Jacquetta Wheeler and Jerry Hall were just some of the stars who turned up to celebrate the charity's anniversary.

Speaking at the event, Frank Field congratulated the Cool Earth team, led by Matthew Owen, on all their hard work to date, which has resulted in over 200,000 acres of forest being saved from destruction.

Rainforest destruction accounts for as many CO2 emissions as the USA - six billion tonnes each year. 1.6 billion people depend on rainforests for their welfare and livelihoods. It is therefore vital that rainforest is protected.

Cool Earth employs a unique model whereby the charity works with local rainforest communities to safeguard the forest they live in from illegal logging. Local communities are made the legal custodians of the land, and Cool Earth supports these communities to earn a better income through sustainable employment programmes, rather than illegal logging.
